One of the most memorable Bulgarian novels, “Condemned Souls”, was written by Dimitar Dimov and published in 1945. It received a state award, was translated into Serbo-Croatian, Hungarian and Polish and was screened.
Accidental acquaintance with a representative of the Jesuit Order in Spain and the subsequent visit to Toledo, where the residence of the order, strengthen the writer’s interest in Catholicism and make it one of the narrative threads in the novel.
The Spanish reality of the Civil War gave birth to an intriguing plot that made the novel especially popular.
